8FL History

History of the 8FL

Dave Carrington started the 8FL in 2000. We played our first season in the Pekin Park, all the teams used the same field- there were three teams- the Pekin Bulldogs, Canton Steelers, and the Morton Titans. Wendell Covert was one of the first team captains and took a lot of the leadership of the league following the first season. Second season the teams that were added- Metamora Redbirds, Washington Panthers, and Macomb X-Bombers.

When Macomb came into the league, Macomb's Eric McKee helped the league to continue to grow by pushing that the teams that should have home and away games instead of playing at one field. This helped the league to grow further. Then the 8FL guys got into the MFL with the old Springfield Bucs. That brought a Springfield link and led to Capital City Outlaws and Jacksonville Sharks joining in.

In 2004, the 8FL had 5 teams- Capital City Outlaws (present since 2004, MFL 2003-2005), Jacksonville Sharks (2004-2008, MFL 2002-2004), Pekin Renegades (2004, then Farmington Team Renegade, 2005), Macomb X-Bombers (2001-2004, then Macomb Mayhem 2005-2007), and Metamora Redbirds (2001-2007, then Metamora Razorbacks 2008-2009). There were other expansion teams- Tazewell Tigers (present since 2005), Pekin Dominators (2005-2007), Mid-State Thunderbirds (present since 2006), Springfield Stallions (2006), Central Illinois Chargers (2006-2007), Bushnell Warriors (present since 2006), Peoria Punishers (present since 2007), Sangamon County Seminoles (present since 2008), Quincy Spartans (present since 2008), Macoupin County Cougars (2008, then Central Illinois Hawks 2009), and have added Illinois Valley Lobos and Decatur Rage for the 2010 season. The 8FL currently has 12 teams.

From the day 8FL was started, one of the founders said "The reason I started the 8fl was pure football- Many people don't get the opportunity to play after high school. Most of us find out the life is not football- But the 8fl adds a little more football to life. This is that opportunity."

For the past 9 years, the Commissioners in order were: Dave Carrington (2000-2001), Wendell Covert (2002-2003), Eric McKee (2004-2005), Jim Luck (2006), Aaron Boosinger (2007), Brian Wonders (2008-2009). Also had governing body of League enacted in 2008 that consisted of Vice Commissioner (Dru Kitterman, 2008-2009), Treasurer (Dan Eck, 2008-2009). and Secretary (Scott Fayhee, 2008-2009).
